Repairs Being Made to the Upper and Lower Durham Dams in Durham

Please be aware that Saugeen Conservation and the Municipality of West Grey are working together this summer to complete necessary repairs to the Upper and Lower Durham Dams.  As a result, the boards, timbers, and uprights that are regularly inserted into the dams by this time have not been put into place. These repairs can only be made in low water or drier conditions.

Work will begin at the Upper Durham Dam first, with the intent to install the timbers and boards as soon as repairs have been completed to allow the upper reservoir to fill.  Work at the Lower Durham Dam is more extensive and requires approvals from other authorities.  As a result, it is unlikely that the Lower Durham Dam boards will not be put into place this summer.

“Completing this work and upgrading the integrity of the dams is extremely important for a number of reasons” stated Jo-Anne Harbinson, Manager of Water Resources and Stewardship Services.  “These dams play an integral role in helping to manage frazil ice and lower the possibility of flooding in the Town of Durham. It is of the utmost importance that this work be completed” she continued.

In the meantime, swimming opportunities are available at the Middle Durham Dam for summer fun and enjoyment.

Saugeen Conservation, and the Municipality of West Grey are grateful for your understanding and patience.  As soon as the necessary repairs are completed, updates and notifications will be provided.
